Generations and generations of people have lived in the mountains all over the world. They have learned and mastered the ways of these mountains. These people have come to live easily in them and have developed techniques in order to move safely through and over them. These people are called “mountaineers” and this exercise of their skills is called “mountaineering”. When these mountaineers climb a particular mountain with the aim of reaching its summit, they become “mountain climbers”.

Mountain Climbing is actually just part of the wider adventure activity called mountaineering and for a long time, these two were practiced only because they were useful skills. Mountaineers used mountain climbing to rescue stranded people or strayed sheep. They used it for hunting animals in higher terrain. Mountaineers would also guide travelers over difficult and often high paths that they had to cross. However, they would never do it for the sake of adventure or for fun. This was because they thought that there were monsters and demons lurking in the higher peaks so they stayed away and lived as close to the plains as they could.

However in early Renaissance Europe, individuals started to venture into the mountains simply for the pleasure of it and sometimes as a sport. For instance, Petrarch wrote about his 1335 climb of Mont Ventoux in France as being exhilarating. Instead of being tired or terrified, he rejoiced in the mountain’s hidden beauty, views and closeness to heaven. By 1786, these individuals started climbing in sizable groups. They started scaling higher and higher peaks and others were ambitious enough to climb the unclimbed peaks of Europe. In 1786, mountain climbing was given a boost as a sport in Europe with the successful ascent of the 15,781-foot Mont Blanc, the highest point in the Swiss Alps. By 1850, the Swiss Alps were regularly climbed by English climbers during their summer vacations. Because of this, the tradition of the trained and dedicated Swiss guides was established. These guides would go with expeditions that began to explore and climb the other great mountains of the world.

The first ever successful ascent of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, is probably the most famous climb in history. It was done in the year 1953 by a British expedition under the command of Colonel John Hunt. Two members of the expedition, Edmund Hillary who was a New Zealander and Tenzing Norkey who was a Sherpa (a Tibetan tribesman), reached the peak on May 29. 32 years before this colossal achievement, 11 attempts to summit were made and a lot of lives were lost. This included the great British climber George Leigh-Mallory and Andrew Irvine, his fellow climber. They were last seen heading for the summit of Mount Everest during their expedition in 1924.

Since the scaling of Mount Everest, the sport of mountain climbing has become more popular than before. Every year, more and more people are starting to climb and more expeditions are sent that try new routes to reach different mountain peaks. There is a growing list of countries making serious mountaineering efforts. The list includes, of course, the European countries that have actively participated long before. South American countries are also joining in. They compete with nations like India, People’s Republic of China, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Since mountain climbing is a sport that is practiced worldwide, all cities that have a mountain or a cliff in its area is sure to have a local mountaineering club where people can learn to climb safely and skillfully. These local clubs are often affiliated with their national counterparts. The Alpine Club of London is the oldest and most famous climbing club. In the United States, three of the most important clubs are the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Sierra Club and the American Alpine Club.

Buying the right mountaineering equipment for your trip is one of the most crucial factors in ensuring your safety where you’re on a climb. Once you’re up the side of that mountain, there’s no emergency store where you can pick up an extra hat or scarf if the weather turns nasty. You’re going to be very much on your own, so it’s always best to plan well in advance to make sure you have everything you could possibly need.

The first thing you should think about before you set off is the type of climb you’re choosing, the time of year and the local weather. Always check the local weather conditions well in advance, and pack appropriately. If you know it’s going to be cold, don’t skimp on the layers. Make sure you pack a pair of solid gloves and a warm wool hat, as well as the other layers you’re going to need to keep you cozy.

Next, you should make sure your equipment from previous climbs is in good condition, and clean any boots or other tools before you leave. This will allow you to sort out what you need before your trip, and will give you the best chance when you get up there on the mountain. If you have a tent, make sure you can still erect it quickly and easily, and ensure it is still fully intact. There’s nothing worse than a leaky tent during a storm when you’re trying to get some much-needed rest.

On top of that, you should make sure you have the correct boots for your climb, and crampons if necessary. Ideally, you should be looking for solid, comfortable boots which offer the necessary support for your feet, whilst also keeping the elements out. If you’re at all unsure about your requirements for your trip, it’s a good idea to visit your local outdoor store and ask for some advice. This way you can be sure to cover all the bases before you head out for your trip.

It is very important to ensure you have the right equipment on board before you embark on any mountaineering trip. Not only can it be essential for your climb, but it can also save your life in emergency situations. Take into account all possible eventualities, and ensure you have all the materials you could possibly need in place to avoid any unforeseen problems during your climb.

Rock climbing is a sport that involves climbing steep rocky terrain. It is a very exciting sport that involves a lot of physical exertion and challenge. However, rock climbing can be very dangerous, if not done properly. There are basically two kinds of rock climbing: aid climbing (use of gears like rope, ladders and bolts) and free climbing (no gear is used except for safety). Other kinds of rock climbing are: sport climbing, top-rope climbing, solo climbing, bouldering, traditional climbing, mountaineering and indoor climbing. There are certain techniques generally used for rock climbing: tying in, leading, abseiling, lowering and others.

Using the right kind of gear not only makes rock climbing easier, but also safe. Some basic rock climbing equipment includes: ropes, cords, webbing, carabiners, harnesses, belay devices (sticht plate, ATC, Gri-Gri, Figure Eight), Descenders (figure eight, rescue eight, ATC), Ascenders, protection devices (nuts, hexcenters, spring loaded camming devices), sewn runners, helmets, climbing harnesses (fully adjustable or partly adjustable), climbing screws, pulleys, trekking pole, pitons, haul bag, bouldering mat, and holds. Special training equipment for climbing includes: grip savers, fingerboards, campus boards and more. Check out the equipment before buying it. It should be safe, comfortable and the right size.

Some of the most popular rock climbing gear brands are: Black Diamond, Volcom, Nixon, Oakley, Smith, Spy, The North Face, Nikita, Eagle Creek, Dakine, Mountain Hardwear and others. Climbing equipment has to be certified by the International Federation of Mountaineering Associations (UIAA) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Rock climbing equipment can also be purchased online. Some rock climbing clubs lend most of the required gear for their members. There are also stores that rent out climbing gear.

This section is devoted to those activities that are mostly devoted to actual building of muscle and require more strength than the ones previously listed. It’s fool-hearty to believe that none of these activities cross over, because they all do to some extent. However, there are some activities, such as rock climbing that, while the heights and danger might stimulate the heart more than actual repetitive muscle exhaustion, it’s a much more strength-based activity.

ROCK CLIMBING

A challenge to your senses, all manner of adventure sports are a fresh approach to fitness and an excellent way to cross-train your body into ultimate fitness. But don’t let the term “adventure” frighten you. Rock climbing may adventurous, but when calculatedly learned and practiced, it can be something that is far more beneficial to the whole musculoskeletal system than it is perilous. It’s greatest benefit is the strengthening and conditioning of the entire body, with an emphasis on upper body power.

Without a doubt, rock climbing emphasizes coordination and strength. The two, in fact, are highly interdependent. Upper body strength is key here, but having an overall balance of strength is a plus. Conditioning is something is that required in addition to performing and practicing movements on a regular basis. This, too, is interdependent for the actual ability to climb at all, let alone enjoy climbing or setting goals in the outdoors. So what does that mean? A rock climbing gym is really the only place to start in a sane and safe manner. This isn’t a sport to be undertaken lightly. Unlike hopping onto a mountain bike or donning a pair of running shoes and hitting the local track, rock climbing requires a ton of skill, and practice. It is a synergy of many different attributes and abilities put together to compile a total picture of capability, strength, balance and calculated mental and physical agility.

Have we scared you off yet? Don’t be scared. A rock climbing gym is a great place to enjoy the sport, and acquire skills that, even if you never venture out on to an actual rock, you’ll be able to benefit from. Though, why wouldn’t you want to test your skills under a blazing 80 degrees, and enjoy the elements and freedom of climbing against a backdrop of the great outdoors?

Rock climbing works just about every muscle in the upper body (pectorals, deltoids, forearms, biceps, triceps, rectus abdominus, serratus, intercostals, latissimus dorsi, spinal erectors and teres major) as well as a few in the lower body (hip flexors, trocanter, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves). It is probably the single most demanding total body engagement one can find in any strength-based activity.

Indoor climbing gyms have popped up all over the country—either as a part of a larger gym or as a separate entity that offers nothing but climbing to its members. Classes are necessary as it’s a skill that is impossible to pick up by osmosis!

Cost of classes and/or gym membership:

For a gym like Gold’s Gym in Portland,OR where rock climbing comes as part of a total body package, (CALL 503-222-1210) you can get in on one of their specials and pay as little as $299 a year at certain times. Rock climbing isn’t taken as seriously as in a ‘climbers-only’ gym, but it’s affordable and is a great way to get your feet wet in the sport to see if you like it. For a rock climbing only gym like Dyno-Rock Indoor Climbing Gym in Arlington, TX you pay a monthly fee ($45) and then pay a class fee for instruction ($10) and a rental fee for equipment ($6 for harness, carabener, shoes, and chalk bag).

Buying your own gear:

For a simple gym kit (harness, belay, carabener), without shoes, you can pay between $75-$120 for your own gear. Shoes are about $60-$120. If you’re going outside, expect to pay a lot more for all the gear you need because, let’s face it, it has to be good!

Advantages:

You can rock climb indoors and out. You have the ability to be completely safe indoors or take more chances outdoors, depending upon what you want. You’ll feel more free as a human being than you ever have. You can choose this over standard strength training any day you are working upper body if you join a combined gym.

Greatest peril:

Falling and overuse injuries to hands, fingers, wrists, shoulders and neck

Disadvantages:

It takes a long time to become proficient at this sport, and it isn’t cheap!

Benefits:

Build unbelievable strength in your upper body and have a sense of agility unmatched by any other sport. Your mental acuity will soar. Your concept of “fear” as you currently know it, will be short-listed.

Best places to Rock Climb:

Ready to grip it and rip it like the big boys? Of Gateway’s Top10 Best Places to Rock Climb, the top nine are located in South Africa. Number one? The steep sandstone faces on Table Mountain in the Peninsula Mountain Chain in South Africa. Here in the U.S.? California’s Yosemite National Park or Tuolumne Meadows in California’s High Sierras.

KAYAKING

This is one of those cross-over sports that requires both strength and endurance. However, we put it into our strength category because of the amount of upper body muscle it requires in order to engage in it.

Kayaking can be done on a lake, river, or in the ocean. If you don’t have access to one of these, it likely isn’t a good choice for you. However, with the diversity of land and many natural bodies of water found in the U.S., it would be hard to believe that there isn’t a body of water someplace near your home to provide you with recreational and fitness opportunities.

In fact, the sport of kayaking is growing in popularity so much that the price of kayaks have absolutely gone through the roof! An entry-level inflatable kayak starts in the neighborhood of about $250. You can find them at Costco in the late spring and early summer or at a sporting goods store. They only go up from there. $699-$999 buys you a single-man kayak built for recreational paddling of all skill levels, either an ocean or fresh water model. The greater the stability and lighter weight the materials, the more expensive it gets. $1000 and upward buys a serious kayak for higher ability level and more competitive conditions. When we say “upwards”, we were shocked to find that kayaks can actually sell for $10G’s! Yeah, the price of a pretty flashy speed boat, complete with motor and leather seats. (Drool)….

But the truth is, while kayaking can be expensive, it doesn’t have to be. Nor does it have to happen in Class IV rapids to be beneficial to your strength and endurance levels. It’s a great upper body workout for anyone. For fitness purposes, kayaking is actually better suited to still water, such as is found on lakes. Rivers provide their own challenges, and certainly, it requires strength, endurance and calculated choices in order to navigate successfully and safely. However, if you’re purely into the enjoyment of being out on the water and getting your strength needs met, kayaking is a great way to do it!

Equipment needed:

A kayak of some kind, a cart with wheels to get it from car to water, plus an oar, swim gear and a change of clothes, as well as a floatation device/ life preserver

Muscles worked: Latissimus dorsi, lower pecs, deltoids, serratus, intercostals, obliques, biceps and triceps

Advantages:

Can be a great way to get out of the gym and burn calories along with building upper body strength. Calms the mind, and is a great way to fish and view wildlife.

Disadvantages:

Kayaks are bulky and require roof racks. They can be quite heavy, depending upon the model, and require two people to lift and carry them. You can only kayak year ‘round if you live in a place where the water doesn’t freeze over in winter.

Benefits:

A great fitness tool, they can develop the back and shoulders like nothing else. There are no limitations to when you can kayak—it’s a great summer activity in the early morning, heat of the day or at twilight

Best places to see the world from a Kayak:

Alaska, Hawaii and the South Pacific. http://www.alaskaseakayakers.com/, OR http://www.kayakkauai.com/

EXTREME OUTDOOR WORKOUTS –

Obstacle Course Racing & Fitness Boot Camps

If you live near an army base, you may have seen the obstacle courses that armed forces must train on to prove that they can sufficiently persevere in combat out in the field. Cargo nets, body hurdles, tire tracks, rope grids, walls, beams and bars, etc. are all a part of these courses. In fact, if you follow women’s fitness, you probably know that competitions such as the Galaxy or Tri-Fitness competitions, require that a woman compete on a course just like that in order to test her physical fitness in addition to her aesthetic appeal. Trust us, these aren’t your average T&A shows! While these girls may look like cute little “Hooters” honeys, they’re actually fitness gorillas capable of serious ass-kicking.

This interest in military type training emerged several years ago and it’s become a full-blown industry unto itself. The only problem is, there aren’t a lot of obstacle courses available and open to the civilian public. So serious course runners have begun to build their own courses in their own back yards. Let’s face it, climbing a wall with just your own two feet and a hemp rope isn’t exactly for the mild mannered.

To quench the appetites of those interested in learning how to pursue this kind of ‘serious fitness’, many camps have sprung up to give weekend warriors their fix on hardcore fitness. These camps include work on an actual obstacle course, along with personalized “You’re scum soldier” kind of ear-barking that would leave even the most Semper-Fi’ed individual shaking in his mother’s army boots.

The great thing that comes out of this is a kind of physical culture and training regime is a work ethic that most people can take back into the gym with them, and get much better results. At these camps, such as outdoor fitness boot camp “Camp Technique” in Los Angeles, weekend inductees (maggots?) engage in everything from super circuit training, to advanced stretching techniques, to weighted ball training, to “weak point trainingԅ in order to realize that what they originally thought was a hard training session was more like wetting the bed in their sleep!

Obstacle Coursing can compliment any training routine and satisfy a number of training goals, if not compliment what you’re currently doing. It’s an excellent all around type of strength, endurance and agility training tool. It also has the power to transform the body into a sleek, fit machine in under 6 months, provided you follow a good diet in addition. But it’s not for the weak of heart. It’s best that you use obstacle course work, or super-circuit type training for a compliment to an already strong physical fitness program.

Attending a camp is just a great way to get started.

Cost of camp:

$150 per person/ per day or packages of $500 for a week

Cost of Use of Course:

If you’re lucky enough to have one in the area that you can run. Use of it can be as cheap as $5 a time. (Kissimmee, FL, Orlando, FL, Venice, CA, and locations in Ohio and Texas, as well as several others springing up in a town near you).

Cost of Building own course:

$500 for a simple set of old tires, a cargo net and a few over-under hurdles, to $5000 for a complete course on acreage, complete with wall, bars sunk into a permanent foundation and rope grids.

Muscles worked:

ALL!

Equipment needed:

Clothing you can move in, water, gloves with tacky grip, good athletic shoes with cushion for concussion, ball cap, visor or sunglasses

Advantages:

Can get you into shape like nothing else. A true combination of strength and cardio in one. Can really cut down time in the gym once you’re fit enough to go

Disadvantages:

Not a lot of obstacle courses are available to civilians; you’ll have to build your own unless you live in a few select places where obstacle courses and civilian fitness go hand in hand.

Benefits:

You can transform your body in a short time, your strength will increase by 20%, on average, within the first 1-2 months. You can count it as a full body workout, or upper body workout, and skip the gym that day. It will push you past any result you could get in the gym within the same time frame.

The Equipment Of The Mountaineer

Some of my friends from the East Coast get a little annoyed with me when I refuse to acknowledge certain geographical landmarks as mountains. Well, I’m sorry, but in order for it to be a real mountain, it must meet one of the following characteristics: it must have that jagged, roughhewn look; it must have snow on it all year round; or it must be an active volcano. Anything else is just an overgrown hill. I love mountains, and I have a great deal of respect for them. I also think that the people who climb them are a little different from the rest of us. Extremely impressive, mind you, but a bit nuts. Most of us will never climb a real mountain. However, if at some point you find yourself with an overwhelming urge to climb to an elevation where you actually have to bring your own oxygen, there are a number of items you can take with you to help ensure your safe return to sea level.

If you’re going to tackle a real mountain, you’re not going to need hiking boots-you’re going to need mountaineering boots. This kind of footwear is designed to deal with the harsh terrain you’re going to encounter. They are usually taller, stiffer and more heavily insulated than typical hiking boots. Although traditionally made from plastic, rubber or leather (or a combination thereof), newer high-quality mountaineering boots sometimes feature materials like Kevlar. This kind of footwear can be fairly expensive, running anywhere from $200 to $500.

A defining characteristic of mountaineering boots is that they are designed to be used with another essential piece of mountaineering equipment: crampons. These are spikes that provide traction on snow and ice, and they can be fitted over mountaineering boots. Crampons are usually made of hardened steel, although lighter aluminum versions are also available. The average price for a pair of decent crampons is about $150.

Most people are at least familiar with the concept and general appearance of an ice axe. They are ubiquitous among mountaineers, probably because they are so multi-purpose and useful. Ice axes have a number of different parts and features, all of which are designed to help the mountaineer scale an icy or snowy slope. The pick is the longer, curved portion of the axe’s head. It features a set of metal teeth, which can be used to prevent or slow undesired descent. The other side of the head is c
1000
alled the adze; it is flat and wide and can be used to chop steps into hard snow or ice. The other end of the axe features a spike that helps the mountaineer plunge the axe into the snow, enabling him to use it for stability, balance and safety. Ice axes can run anywhere from $100 to $350.

Mountains can be as treacherous as the sea, and avalanches should never be far from a mountaineer’s mind. There are a number of devices available for avalanche safety. Avalanche transceivers use electromagnetic sensors to map victims’ locations and depths. If you are in a group of people and some of them are buried in snow, this may help you find them in time. If you are the one buried, you’ll want to have an Avalung, a filtration device that draws air directly from the snowpack, allowing the user to breathe while trapped.

Rafting On the New River in West Virginia - A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

Have the vacation of a lifetime by Rafting the New River in West Virginia…

Now, let’s talk about a great vacation for an adventure lover. Anyone who loves to have a good time in the great outdoors would really love to raft the New River in Fayetteville, West Virginia. There are many other activities like rock climbing, bungee jumping, camping, hiking, and more in and around the area, but whitewater rafting is one of the most popular.

The New and Gauley Rivers really are big and powerful, sometimes more powerful than others, and each have their own benefits and drawbacks for rafters. There are certain times of the year when the rivers are calmer than others and other times when the rafting is downright dangerous. Knowing when these seasons are and your rafting skill level is important to determine when to schedule your vacation. Also, the age of all rafters should be taken into consideration as well. There are rafting experiences that are mild, exciting, world class, and extreme. The minimum age for the mild rafting is six years, 12 years for the exciting, 16 years for the world class, and 18 years for the extreme rafting.

There is rafting all year round, but clothing requirements are very different depending on the weather. In the winter wetsuits should be worn, the summer a t-shirt or bathing suit is fine, and the spring and fall you should wear synthetic fabrics and wool socks to keep your feet warm. Don’t wear cotton if it’s cold because it will make you colder. Remember that no matter whether it is raining or the sun is shining rafting will go on. You will get wet anyway so it doesn’t matter! Never take anything with you rafting that can’t get wet, because it will for sure!

Prices for rafting the New and Gauley Rivers depends on when you raft. Weekday prices are cheaper than weekends and certain seasons, as well as rivers, are more expensive than others. Rafting trips come with all necessary gear, although your clothes, shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats are your own responsibility. Package trips that include showers, cabins, camping, and breakfast may also be purchased.

The best time to go if you don’t like being cold is during the summer months. Of course, if you really like a challenge then you might like the fall or spring when the rapids are bigger and faster and provide a more challenging trip. It really is up to you! One thing is for sure and that is when you raft the New or Gauley Rivers, or both, you will have an experience of a lifetime.

Mountain climbing is a very popular sport. It is very exciting, adventurous and fun, provided you do it the right way. Mountaineering depends on your route, your partner and your level of expertise. Mountain climbing can also be very risky, as much depends on the weather, the mountain, and other conditions.

Being equipped with the right kind of gear is very important for mountain climbing. These days, there is very good equipment for climbing available. The gear is being made to be very durable, strong and light weight.

The main equipment used for mountain climbing includes: shoes/mountaineering boots, gloves, harnesses, ropes, racks, belay devices, locking carabiners, helmets, axes, headlamp, belay devices (sticht plate, ATC, Gri-Gri, Figure Eight), Descenders (figure eight, rescue eight, ATC), Ascenders, protection devices (nuts, hexcenters, spring loaded camming devices), sewn runners, climbing harnesses, climbing screws, pulleys, trekking pole, mountaineering shaft, pitons, haul bag, bouldering mat, holds, books/maps, special pants, and even underwear for rough weather. Other personal items may include: food and water, sunglasses, first aid kit, sun block, extra clothing, camera, tent, cookware, camp stove, sleeping bag/pad, a knife, approach shoes, chalk and chalk bag. Special training equipment for climbing includes: grip savers, fingerboards, campus boards and more.

Climbing gear has to be carefully carried, since it has to stay with you until you reach the top. You can clip some things to your harness, thus keeping the upper part of the body relatively lightweight. However, you may not be able to carry too many things like this, and there is also the chance of losing some of the things on the way. Most climbers use special backpacks that are designed to hold most of the essential things.

There are many providers of mountain climbing equipment. Some of the most popular brands are: Black Diamond, Volcom, Nixon, Oakley, Smith, Spy, The North Face, Nikita, Eagle Creek, Dakine, Mountain Hardwear and others. Climbing equipment has to be certified by the International Federation of Mountaineering Associations (UIAA) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Mountain climbing equipment can also be purchased online.

I also have asthma, and live in Houston, Texas - a place flat and far from anything worth climbing. Making it to the top of an 8000m summit would take years of lifestyle-altering training and thousands of dollars in gear and travel .

Different climbing techniques and sports climbing

What separates Trad Climbing from other styles is that the safety of the : trad climclimber relies on the tools used as well as the suitable area to place such tools on the mountain wall. The Australians call this ‘adventure climbing’. … This means that the gear for sports climbing is virtually minimal compared to trad climbing, but not non-existent! The kit you need should consist of a harness, climbing shoes, climbing helmet, rope, belay device and quickdraws.
