Rock Climbing Shoes

June 17th, 2009 |

rock climbing shoes Yes, it can be done barefoot; but rock climbing shoes provide more friction and comfort against sharp and rough rocks during a climb.

This section provides the basic parts and features of climbing shoes to assist you in choosing the perfect pair for your climbing activity.

Sole: It is the bottom part of the shoe which provides the friction needed against the surface of the climbing route.

Rand: This is the rubber layer above the sole which runs around the shoe.

Tongue: It is the flap covering the inner part of the shoe. Once the lace are tightened, make sure the flap is folded properly to conform the shin and ankle of your feet to avoid causing pressure points.

Heel: This is the bottom portion on the back of the shoe designed to cup your heel and to provide height. Important to note is that due to the added height, there will be more pressure added to your feet.

Subsidiary/Heel Loop: It helps to fit your feet in the climbing shoes and comes with different models with subsidiary loops near the heel loop.

Lining/Padding: It gives added comfort and protection for your feet.

Lace/Lacing: Different types of lacing are used by different available rock climbing shoes.

A common type has eyelets or punched holes, enforced with metal grommets to prevent tearing.

Other types have webbings through which shoe laces run through. Some climbing shoes provide both mechanisms. It is important that you are comfortable in your climbing shoes, no matter what type of lacing your choose.

Rock Climbing Ropes

June 15th, 2009 |

Rock Climbing Ropes

When you’re life is on the line, literally trusting a rope in rock climbing helps. It is important to know about rock climbing ropes. Based on the climbing technique and rope system one prefers, one can choose the appropriate type of rope to be used. Two basic types of rope are the dynamic and static ropes.

Dynamic rope provides maximum stretch of the rope to minimize and absorb the impact of a fall. Often used in standard rock climbing techniques, dynamic ropes are more subjected to wear and tear. Static rope is in contrast with dynamic rope. It is designed not to stretch, thus used in rappelling.

Types of Rock Climbing Ropes:

Single Ropes

Singles rock climbing ropes vary in length (although standard is approximately 10.5mm x 50m), and generally has a width size of 9.5mm to 11mm. One should not be discouraged with this type of rope because it is thinner. In some cases, a climb will require a lighter rope such as with subsequent lowering or rappelling.

Twin Ropes

Twin rock climbing ropes are basically two separate ropes of the same size, designed to put together through each piece of gear. They use thin ropes, about 7.6mm each. Often used in ultra-long rock, ice, or mixed routes, twin ropes provide light-weight gear used in such expeditions. Twin ropes offer the highest safety margin and full length rappels.

Half or Double Ropes

In contrast with twin ropes, half or double rock climbing ropes use two separate ropes of the same size, but clipped independently into pieces of gear. It is thicker than twin ropes, averaging 8.8mm in width, to compensate if the other rope fails to hold a fall. The security using half or double ropes is preferred by climbers taking on long and dangerous traverses, and razor sharp rocks. A belay method enables independent control of each rope used.

Rock climbing ropes follow a standard set by the International Union of Alpine Associations based on its fall ratings. Fall ratings measure the number of falls which the rope can handle. It is also possible for you to test your rope. In a single rope test, 80kg of weight is attached to 2.5 meter rope, and the weight will be dropped to 4.8 meters. Half rope test is made by attaching 55kg of weight to a 2.5 meter rope, dropping the weight to 4.8 meters.

Another critical part of rock climbing is communications. Both the climber and the partner holding the rope need to know what the other is doing to maintain a safe climb. Basic Climbing.

rock climbing clothing

Every sport activity requires that you have all the accessories that will make the activity easy and enjoyable. This means that even the clothes you wear should be functional enough and should specifically match the task. This is true for both indoor and outdoor activities like rock climbing.

The clothing that you put on during this activity must therefore be what will give you comfort and set you free from the hassles and bassles of discomfort. Travel California

June 9th, 2009 |

travel californiaThe Yosemite region in east-central California is known for its spectacular panoramas, massive granite cliffs, mountain vistas and historical communities. Yosemite Park offers exciting destinations with about 750,000 acres of land and thousands of ponds and lakes.

It also has 800 miles of hiking trails and 1600 miles of streams. The park is a 6 hour drive from Los Angeles and about 4.5 hours drive from San Francisco.

The Yosemite Valley is well known for its cliffs, meadows, rock formations and waterfalls. The Half Dome granite monolith is one of the mountain attractions, appearing like a giant dome stone that splits in half. The vertical face of El Capitan is also famous among climbers.

Yosemite Falls is the most impressive and considered the highest fall in the world. Other accessible falls in Yosemite Valley are the Bridalveil, Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall.

Tunnel View is another standpoint that gives a full view of the valley located at the western end of Wawona tunnel.

The Crane Flat is an amazing meadow and forest found 16 miles from Yosemite Valley. Sites nearby are the Tuolumne and Giant Sequoias Merced Groves.

Glacier Point is located just 30 miles from Yosemite Valley. It overlooks the valley and the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. Both cross-country and downhill skiing is available at Badger Pass during mid-December to early April. It also overlooks the Washburn Point. It gives a great view of the southern side of the Yosemite Valley in just half a mile before Glacier Point.

Hetch Hetchy Valley has scenery that usually starts up as a point of many trails. Hiking is advisable during spring and early summer. The road through the valley is open year round but with restricted hours. It is however closed during winter and spring.

Tuolumne Meadows is an open-alpine meadow surrounded by domes, peaks and the Tuolumne River. This area is available for snowshoes or skis from November through May or early June. Visitors can explore the meadows through Dog Lake trailhead for 15 miles.

Wawona is the place for Wawona Hotel, Pioneer Yosemite History Center of historic buildings and the Mariposa Grove.

Yosemite is great for those who love outdoor adventure. It has over 800 miles of trails for hiking. No permits are required for hikers who want a day hike to its many trails and footpaths along the valley. Some trails are easy but some are more tiring such as the sheer granite walls. Hikers may also encounter switchbacks, steep terrain and changing rapid weather conditions.

travel california 2

Backpackers can access the Glacier Point road towards trails in the Clark range as well as the parks along the southern part. Tuolumne Meadows also offers 8 different trailheads.

The Chilnualna Falls and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias are popular day hikes at Wawona.

Yosemite Valley also offers stunning rock climbing activities being about 3,000 feet tall and having vertical faces.

The Tuolumne Meadows is also famous for its high elevation rock climbing. The Yosemite Mountaineering School guides have been assisting visitors since 1969, showcasing an AMGA certificate.

One can also go horseback riding. Again, Tuolumne Meadows and Wawona offer commercial horse-riding at DNC Parks and Resorts, along with custom guided trips.

For those who love skiing, try it in Badger Pass. Their cross-country and downhill trails are about 350 miles. The tracks and skating lanes are connected from Badger Pass to Glacier Point. It is open during December and closed on April.

For backpacking, Little Yosemite Valley is one of the most famous sites. It is 4 miles from the Yosemite Valley floor along Merced River.

Lastly, Yosemite has 13 campgrounds, all with forest canopies and rooms. Campgrounds are available at Crane Flat, Wawona, Hodgdon Meadow and half of Tuolumne Meadows. Camping reservations are made from April to September.

Rock Climbing Shoes

June 6th, 2009 |

rock climbing shoesThe first time you go rock climbing, you probably wore your basic hiking shoes. When you are ready to get serious about the sport, you need to consider upgrading.

When rock climbing, your feet serve a very important purpose. Depending on the climbing and terrain, they usually act as anchors for your movements. As anchors, it is important that they grip well. Regular cross trainers and the like are designed for many purposes, but climbing is not one of them.

Climbing shoes are more or less exactly what they sound like. They are designed for the unique grip requirements you need when scaling a boulder or wall.

They tend to look similar to bowling shoes, but without the soles. They are also designed with rugged material and a lace up design. The toe is really where the magic happens. The shoes are designed with a ’sticky’ rubber toes that is soft and provides maximum grip. The first time you try them, you will be shocked at just how much grip they provide.

There is a downside to climbing shoes, however. They have a very limited us, to wit, to climb. If you try to wear them for any other purpose, such as walking to the climb, you feet are going to be punished. You are also going to wear out the shoes and they are not particularly cheap. Most people carry their shoes to the base of the climb and rock climbing shoesthen put them on only when they are actually ready to start.

Climbing shoes have come a long way in the last 20 years. The choice used to be very limited and the quality was hit and miss. Now, there are plenty of choices and quality is very high. The key to finding good shoes is to understand what kind of climbing you are going to be doing.

Start with a general purpose climbing shoe that isn’t massively expensive. As you climb with it, figure out what you like and dislike. When it is time to buy your next pair, you should have a better idea of what you want in a shoe.

Climbing shoes make a world of difference. The grip levels are superior to anything else you could possibly wear. If you are getting serious about climbing, you should definitely buy a pair.

Rock Climbing Jargon

June 5th, 2009 |

rock climbing jargon If you are looking for an inexpensive extreme sport that is pure adrenaline and addicting, rock climbing may be just what you need. When you start out, you are going to need to know some of the following lingo.

Rock Climbing Jargon

Rock climbing is one of those niche sports that gets little publicity, but is incredibly popular. It also happens to be one of the more adrenaline pumping things you can get out and do. Since it is pretty much you and the face of a click, the costs are limited to shoes and the gear to keep you from falling to your death. Put another way, it isn’t going to break the bank. Eventually, however, you will start planning climbing trips to Thailand and other exotic places, and it will cost a few bucks. Trust me, it is worth it.

If you are going to have a go at climbing, you need to know some of the basic jargon. Here we go…

‘Elvis’ - refers to the reaction of newer climbers when they first go beyond the comfort zone in the height of a climb. If you blow through 80 feet or so and start getting stressed, one of your legs may start to gyrate. It looks like you are dancing like Elvis, thus the name. To stop the Elvis, stop looking down at the ground and take slow, deep breaths.

Free climbing is the art of rock climbing without safety ropes. The advantage is it represents the purist form of climbing and is a quicker trip than with safety equipment. The disadvantage, of course, involves the fact there is nothing to save you if a fall occurs. At a minimum, we are talking broken bones. In a worst case scenario, well, you can guess. As a beginner, you should never, ever free climb.

rock climbing jargon2

Bouldering refers to rock climbing on large boulders found in valleys and other areas around the country. Bouldering is both fun and a good place to practice your technique. Boulders almost always have unique angles and edges, which can make them technically challenging. Since you are usually no more than ten feet off the ground, falling usually only damages your pride.

Buildering is rock climbing on buildings. Insanely fun, but also illegal. Falling is not recommended.

Buildering is definitely not for the beginning climber. If you ignore this advice, make sure to take your driver’s license with you so the hospital will know who you are.

Chalk is a powder used by many to keep their hands dry during climbs. The chalk is kept in a chalk bag on your waste. You dip your hands in as you need to dry them off. If you are climbing in some remote location, it is highly advisable you wash the chalk off before driving home. Officers of the law, particularly Highway Patrolmen, often do not understand the difference between climbing chalk and other off white substances. I kid you not!

As you can image, there are plenty of other rock climbing terms you need to know. The above list will at least give you a head start on the process.

Pros of Rock Climbing

June 1st, 2009 |

There are many positives of rock climbing. Most people view these benefits as far outweighing the possibility of injury.

When you consider the positive aspects of rock climbing, you usually think first of the physical benefits.

Although rock climbing is practiced by both genders and almost all ages, it is a sport that requires a great deal of physical strength. Upper body strength is extremely important. Most people who become involved in the sport soon realize that they must be in excellent shape to even begin to enjoy it. This leads to an increase in physical conditioning that is most often beneficial to the participants overall health.

The sport also requires a great deal of mental self discipline. Many adherents of rock climbing point to this as one of the biggest positives. It demands total body awareness.

Rock climbers often tell of how they never feel more alive than they do when they are clinging to the side of a rock. They must be aware of exactly where their feet and hands are located and every movement must be careful, slow, and deliberate.

Among the other positives is the relatively low cost of the equipment needed. Most experts claim that the rock climber can be outfitted with the best possible equipment for a little over $300. This is not expensive compared to the investment needed for equipment in some of the other extreme sports that are popular today.

Perhaps, the most important benefit of rock climbing is what it does for your personal self confidence. This is something that is a bit hard to explain and really has to be felt to be completely appreciated. Rock climbers will speak of the tremendous sense of accomplishment and the exhilaration that comes at the end of a successful climb. When a person stands at the base of a rock face and looks up, the climb appears impossible. It is something that can not be done. Yet, when you have done it, you begin to feel that there is little that you can not do.

Rock climbing has many positives. They are mental, physical, emotional, and financial benefits. There are some risks of injury as well, but the thousands of people who are taking up the sport and spreading it across the country feel the benefits far outweigh the risks. The indoor climbing hills have given more and more people a chance to taste these benefits in a place where the risks are the least, and many people who first experience rock climbing on the artificial climbs there are soon hooked and ready for the real thing outdoors.

The Regs of Rock Climbing

May 22nd, 2009 |

regs of rock climbing

The main regs for rock climbing involve the use of common sense. There are other more concrete rules associated with the sport.

There are no set of rules that applies to the sport and hobby of rock climbing per se. Certain areas impose their own rules on climber before allowing them to climb in their jurisdictions.

These rules generally began with the filing of a release of liability. Rock climbing can be dangerous and most areas will require this release. This is a common rule at indoor climbing arenas also.

In National Parks or designated wild life areas, the rules for rock climbing can range from the proper placing of climbing bolts to the use of power drills on the rock faces. These local rules are usually concerned with the protection of the environmental resources of the park areas. Many areas are considered no-bolt zones. Bolts of any kind can not be permanently attached to the mountains. Most of the best climbing zones are outside the no-bolt areas, however, and this rule does not impact the climbing opportunities.

The area where there are the most rules in the rock climbing hobby is the indoors climbing arena. The rules here include the waiver of responsibility. There are also strict rules requiring parental permission forms for underage climbers. Many areas will not even allow underage climbers on the rock face unless a parent or responsible adult is also present.

Other sets of rules are concerned with the type of equipment that is allowed and in some cases the equipment that is required. Most indoor climbing arenas do not allow the climbers to be barefoot. They also require the wearing of personal safety equipment such as approved helmets. Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited. Since many indoor climbing facilities also provide instruction in climbing techniques, most of these will not allow outside instructors using the hills for classes or training purposes.\

The final area that has strict and numerous rules is the climbing competitions. The rules here will be very strict regarding proper equipment and techniques allowed in the competition.

The purposes of the competition rules are to insure safety and to insure competitiveness.

These rules may differ from competition to competition, but there has been some effort to standardize the rules for competitive climbing.

Free style climbing in the outdoors and outside of Park areas and competitions has no rules, but the rules of common sense and personal responsibility.

Rock Climbing - Thailand’s The Spot

May 20th, 2009 |

Mention Thailand and images of beaches, elephants and Bangkok come to mind. Less known is the fact Thailand rock climbing is some of the best in the world.

Rock Climbing

Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand is bordered by Cambodia, Burma and Laos in the north and Malaysia in the south. The shape of the country is somewhat similar to Italy, and you’ll find similar differences between northern and southern Thailand that you do in Italy. For rock climbing enthusiasts, the south of Thailand is where the action is.

The rock formations in Thailand are almost universally limestone. The level of climbing can be as simple as bouldering or as challenging as tackling over vertical cliffs. This makes Thailand a popular rock climbing destination since it has a little something for everyone.

Krabi

Located on the southern section of the ‘tail’ of Thailand, Krabi has a wide variety of rock climbing challenges. Most of the climbs in this area are of the pre-bolted sport route variety. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of climbs with difficulty levels from beginner to multi-pitch knuckle crushers.

The beauty of climbing in Krabi is…well, the beauty. While you might have visions of jungles and mosquitoes when thinking of Thailand, Krabi is an area of a different sort. Most of the climbs have been set up on cliff faces on the beach. Being natural capitalists, the Thai’s have built hotels, bars and so on at these locations. As a result, you can literally climb a multi-pitch route for five hours, cool off with a swim and then have a beer. If there is such a thing as a rock climbing heaven, many feel Krabi is it.

Before you cash in your savings, keep in mind that Thailand is a seasonal vacation spot. If you go during the wet season, there is a good chance you’ll just end up sitting around drinking beer. While that isn’t too bad, you’ll go crazy looking at the climbs that are so close, but oh so far away.

Generally, you want to head to Thailand from late November through maybe April. The summer months tend to be both incredibly hot and wet. Make sure you pull up forecasts for the area before booking a trip.

Flying to Thailand is inexpensive, but flights are incredibly long with stopovers. Still, it is all worth it once you experience Thailand rock climbing.
