It’s fool-hearty to believe that none of these activities cross over, because they all do to some extent. However, there are some activities, such as rock climbing that, while the heights and danger might stimulate the heart more than actual Read More »

Capitola, California: The Charming, Lively City By The Sea

September 7th, 2009 |

Capitola, California

When people think of California, they think of sun, sand and sea, culture and diversity. Although many look to popular cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego as places to be seen and settle in, there are also people who are drawn to other gems that offer the best of what California represents. One such area is Capitola, a city that has long been admired for its beauty and unique quality. So just what is so charming about Capitola, California?

Capitola dreamin’
Capitola, California is known for its picturesque views. Sitting on the northeastern area of Monterey Bay, the city is an interesting study in varying textures — rocky shorelines, steep cliffs, sloping roads and panoramic views of the stunning Santa Cruz Mountains and Monterey Bay.

This coastal town is the home of New Brighton Beach, a popular spot for summer tourists and vacationers. The wide beaches and scenic grounds offer plenty of opportunities for play and recreation, including surfing, beach volleyball, fishing, hiking, rock climbing and golf. Surf lessons are also offered by numerous shops and amateur surfers along the beach from June to September.

For shoppers, there’s Capitola Mercantile, located at the center of the city. Styled as a European-inspired bazaar, the Mercantile is filled with specialty shops selling locally handcrafted items.

Culture, culture
Capitola was named after the lead female character in ‘The Hidden Land’, written by E.D.E.N. southworth. The novel, incidentally, was a favorite of the daughter of Samuel Hall who founded the city in 1874. As the oldest of the beach resorts in the United States, Capitola has successfully maintained a lively cultural program that promotes the arts through sponsorship, special programs and various activities.

Due to its location, weather and general environment, Capitola has become a favorite destination among tourists. Each year, the city’s population swells as visitors come to play and spend their summers here, soaking in the life in a beach town clasped within a valley surrounded by two cliffs. The river that flows through this charming city is Soquel Creek, also the main attraction for the yearly Begonia Festival. This is a festival of the flowers, wher 1000 e locals and visitors alike deck floats with blooms and show them off in a fluvial parade.

Capitola also hosts an annual arts and wine festival, showcasing local talents and the best of the year’s harvest. It continues to attract the interest of enthusiasts year after year.

For homeowners and new home buyers who want one of the finest natural attractions in the state of California, Capitola is a natural choice. With its weather and beautiful environment, Capitola has always tempted people to come and enticed even more to stay.

Edgy Rock Climbing

May 31st, 2009 |

Getting Edgy While Rock ClimbingMost people think rock climbing is a fairly edgy sport just to begin with. In truth, edges mean something entirely different and unique to the sport.

Most people have a misunderstand view of rock climbing from what they see in the movies.

The movies I am talking about. Ones such as ‘Cliffhanger’ where Sylvester Stallone hangs by his arms and jerks himself to and fro up the mountain for a couple hundred feet. Yeah, I would like to see that!

In truth, climbing is a combination of both the arms and legs. Although it may not seem like it at first glance, the legs are used to carry much of your weight most of the time. The question, of course, is how this can occur when you are on a cliff face. The answer is all about edges.

When climbing a vertical face, there rarely are holes you can just stick your feet in for support. If there are, it is not much of a climb. Instead, you must use the edges of your feet to create a base for your legs. This is done by using the edges on the side and the toe. Let’s take a closer look.

Getting Edgy While Rock Climbing

Toeing-in. As the name suggest, this technique involves sticking the toe of your climbing shoes in a hold of some sort. In truth, you are really just finding a bit of friction where you can plant your big toe. Despite what you might think, this is a pretty rare maneuver. It is also hell on your toe.

Inside Edge- The inside edge technique is the most common in climbing. As the name suggests, you turn the foot out away from your body and use the inner edge of your foot just behind the big toe. You vary how much you turn the foot out based on how you are situated on the rock. Don’t worry about it. It comes naturally. As far as your feet go, this is the strongest foot hold technique you can use. Master this one first.

Outside Edge - As you might guess, this is the opposite of the inside edge technique. It is not easy. The outer edges of your feet are weak, so you should practice this one on climbing walls and such extensively. It is usually used when you are swinging your leg inside of the other.

As you get into climbing, learning edges will be one of the fundamental steps to getting better. You will also come to understand the value of great climbing shoes.

Extractions of a Disoriented Mind

When I kept climbing to reach higher and higher, somehow I knew I couldn’t carry on. My energy has been drained from all the previous climbing of other rocks and this sky-high roc.

Rock Climbing Origins

May 30th, 2009 |

The Origins of Rock Climbing The history of climbing is a recent history. Unlike many sports, climbing does not date back to ancient times. People tended to climb the steep faces of rocky cliffs only when they had to and now they do it because they want to do it.

There was some rock climbing down as a part of Alpine mountaineering. This was done most for rescue type operations. It was not until the latter part of the 19th century that rock climbing was first seen as a sporting activity. It seems to have emerged in three distinct European areas around this time. The first was in Germany in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the Southeastern part of the country near the Czech border. By 1903, there were almost 500 climbers active in this region and climbing clubs were being formed.

The Origins of Rock ClimbingAround the same time, rock climbing was being viewed as a sport in England. Some of the early climbers attracted a lot of attention with solo climbs of very difficult cliff formations. It is here that the practice of assigning difficulty ratings to various formations began. Although formal climbing clubs were slow to form here, many climbers began to meet informally to discuss their climbs and share notes on techniques.

In the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy, a 17 year old student from Munich, Germany, made a daring solo climb and this led to this area being the third great European hotbed of rock climbing. In the United States, rock climbing and mountain climbing were viewed as similar activities, and it was not until the 1950’s that it began to emerge as a separate sport. Still much of the techniques used in rock climbing were developed as a part of mountain climbing.

The Origins of Rock Climbing In recent years, rock climbing has going through a period of rapid evolution. New styles and improved equipment are constantly being introduced. Many rock climbers are starting to consider the hobby as almost more of a lifestyle than a sport.

One trend has been the introduction of indoor rock climbing in urban areas. These facilities have artificial rock faces that are designed to simulate actual formations.

The safety equipment used in the indoor arenas have made it possible to practice and experience much of the thrill and demanding nature of rock climbing without the risk.

Despite the safety equipment and improved techniques, rock climbing is not only a sport that demands a great deal of physical strength and stamina, but is also hazardous. The history of rock climbing is recent history because mankind had enough challenges to his strength and stamina in just routine living in the past. Rocks were only climbing if there was some compelling reason to climb them. It says much about our modern society that rock climbing is becoming a popular activity. There is something in human nature that always seeks a challenge. Rock climbing came into existence because of that basic drive.

A Terrific Place To Call Home

May 26th, 2009 |

anthem arizona Move to Anthem AZ a community, a lifestyle and a place to call home. There’s fun for kids of all ages, in this amenity-filled development.

Many times over the years, a new subdivision is created with little or no real thought about the infrastructure required to support the newly-created community.

Well, this is categorically not the case with Anthem. Everything you need is there, or on its way, and then some.

Created by Dell-Webb, this Arizona town on the outskirts of Phoenix offers homes to suit all budgets; from the mid to low $200K all the way up to “oh my goodness gracious.” There is something for everyone. From a young family just starting out to a retired couple looking for space to entertain the grand-kids, from time to time, Anthem has you covered. All of this, plus an easy commute via I-17 to Phoenix if that is where work takes you.

Also, for the family, there is the lure of brand new schools, with excellent sport facilities, libraries and, in some cases, theatre complexes to help keep your children motivated and actively involved.

Plus, the recreation facilities are world class. The park-like, open space communal area with duck-ponds and waterfalls are an absolute joy to behold. Early one evening, recently, I saw a father with his young son and daughter doing a little fishing. What better way to unwind after a long day of work, than to kick back with your children and exchange stories of your day, whilst teaching a worm to swim at the end of a fishing pole? Remember, though, “catch and release” only! Arizona living at its finest.

There is also a moden railroad that runs through the park offering rides to one and all.

For the more energetic amongst us, the diversions are endless, offering basketball and tennis courts plus a gymnasium complex with 2 swimming pools that are the envy of the surrounding Arizona communities.

The huge gym is stocked with up-to-the-minute equipment, including stationary bikes, treadmills, free weights; you name it, it’s got it! Aerobic classes are offered and there is also a rock-climbing wall for those days when you don’t have enough time to conquer Everest.

Then there are the pools. An enormous regular pool for swimming and an even larger one with water slides and water features worthy of a water park anywhere in the world. Watch out for the enormous bucket in the air that fills up and then overturns and splashes down on everyone. Great fun for all kids aged from 8 to 80. Lifeguards are in attendance but please, be careful out there.

Anthem, like much of the Valley of the Sun, has golf courses that rival the finest that Scottsdale and Phoenix have to offer.

Everything is right here in Anthem including Wal-Mart, Home Depot and many other nationally renowned “Big Box” stores. There is also an outlet mall for those canny shoppers among us who like saving money. Plenty of good eating to be found from upscale local restaurants to well known fast-food stores.

In all my years of selling real estate, I have rarely seen such a well planned and executed community. Anthem AZ is truly a great place to start or raise a family. What are you waiting for? If you want a closer look at Anthem and all its amenities here is a link to a Virtual Tour.

Specialized Mountain Bikes

May 25th, 2009 |

mountain bikers

Mountain biking, which began as a hobby, has become a popular sport these days, with specialized mountain bikes being manufactured for the rough terrain involved.

As the first rays of the sun broke through, Kevin had a quick breakfast and hit the trail. He found early morning mountain biking especially exhilarating.

Everything is so fresh and keen, he thought, as he breathed in the thin mist that still hung along the tree-filled mud trail. Despite the fact that the trail progressed steadily towards the mountain’s summit, it was a mix of steep, short climbs, swift shooting descents, interwoven with short patches of flat terrain. About two feet in width, comprising of packed clay, the reddish-brown trail was strewn with lots of obstacles that would test his biking prowess.

Being one of his favorite mountain biking trails, Kevin knew that the view on the summit would be breathtaking. And so would be his descent, hitting roots at breakneck speed, skidding and sliding through the twisting turns covered with pine needles and leaves, spraying dirt on muddy patches, having to pull his body back on his specialized mountain trek bicycle on the steepest portions to prevent him from pitching forward head over heels - in short, it would be a perfect end to a great biking trek up the mountain.

mountain bikers
It was in the late 1960s that mountain biking first began, when racing down fast on mountain trails, also known as ‘Repack races‘, caught the imagination of biking enthusiasts. The race along with the trail it took place on was called ‘Repack’ because the twisting, torturous route downhill on Pine Mountain, California, forced the bikers to use the coaster brakes of their bikes to such an extent that the smoking hubs had to be repacked with grease after each run.

These races also gave rise to the introduction of mountain trek bikes, or the kind of bicycles that were suitable for the rougher terrain involved in mountain biking. Although initially it was merely a hobby, mountain biking would soon evolve into an athletic sport, with California being the first place where the sport began.

It was in the latter part of the 1970s that manufacturers of road bicycles started producing specialized mountain bikes. Gary Christopher Fisher, a biking enthusiast who began taking part in track and road competitions at the early age of 12, is credited to have been the first to have created a specialized mountain bike. The mountain bikes of those days had wider forks and frames along with wider tires.

The handlebars of the trek bicycles used for mountain biking have a different design compared to regular bikes. Unlike the curved, dropped handlebars of road bikes, the handlebars of mountain bikes are transverse-mounted and straight. The first mass produced trek bicycles meant for mountain biking were equipped with 18 gears.

It was in the 1990s that the brake being mounted on the frame or hub was universally adopted, along with six bolts used for bolting the rotor or disc to the hub, as well as the system of using two bolts to attach the brake pad assembly or piston to the frame. Also, it was at this time that mountain bikes began to be equipped with front suspension forks, in order to make rough terrain bike riding easier on the arms of the riders.

The mountain bikes that are available these days are much lighter and also offer many more options in the design of the suspension. Mountain bikes can be categorized into four classes according to their suspension: 1) Hardtail; 2) Fully-Rigid; 3) Full or Dual Suspension; 4) Soft Tail.

  • The Hardtail Mountain Bike: The frame of the hardtail has no rear suspension although it can come with a suspension fork in front.
  • The Fully-Rigid Mountain Bike: This is a sub-category of the hardtail, which has a fork that is built rigid.
  • The Full or Dual Suspension Mountain Bike: As is suggested by its name, the frame of this bike is equipped with both front suspension in the fork as well as rear suspension.
  • The Soft Tail Mountain Bike: These models are equipped with some rear suspension, with a frame having less suspension compared to a dual suspension bike.

It was in 2002 that mountain bikes began to come with wheels that measured 29 inches. The larger sized wheels were created to enable the bike ride over obstacles much more easily compared to the usual 26-inch wheeled bikes. However, mountain biking experts complain that the larger wheels make the bikes less maneuverable.

These days, the technological advances that are being utilized to build the most user-friendly as well as the most stylish mountain bikes have given rise to a competitive business of creatively designed mountain bikes suitable for all sorts of terrain as well as budgets. The innovations in the designs are still continuing and hence it is expected that mountain biking enthusiasts will continue to be offered increasingly radical models in the future.
